TOKYO, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday as upbeat U.S. housing data and the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar lifted the market mood.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 145.21 points, or 0.69 percent, from Thursday to 21,208.19.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 9.59 points, or 0.62 percent, at 1,547.14.
Mining, oil and coal product, and service-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell. Enditem
