BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.41 percent, at 2870.6 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.93 percent lower at 8916.11 points.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday as data showing Japan's economic growth in the first quarter beat median market expectation, although gains were capped by ongoing concerns over the future course of the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 51.64 points, or 0.24 percent, from Friday to close the day at 21,301.73.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 158.85 points, or 0.57 percent, to 27,787.61 points on Monday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,699.23 and 27,999.6. Turnover totaled 105.58 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 13.45 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market surged on Monday following the weekend's federal election, with the financial sector by far the biggest improver.

At the market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 110.80 points or 1.74 percent at 6,476.10, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 104.50 points or 1.62 percent at 6.564.70.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended almost unchanged Monday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) edged down 0.09 points to settle at 2,055.71. Trading volume stood at 622 million shares worth 4.6 trillion won (3.9 billion U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 987.13 points on Monday, up 10.65 points, or 1.09 percent against the previous trading day.

Over 153.160 million shares worth 3.656 trillion Vietnamese dong (158.9 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, with prices of 173 stocks rising, 115 stocks decreasing, and 92 stocks remaining unchanged.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 1.006 percent higher on Monday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 76.32 points to 7,660.14. The all-share index went up by 34.13 points, or 0.72 percent, to 4,747.40.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed at record high on Monday.

Exit polls have predicted a comfortable victory for the BJP-led alliance, which boosted the benchmark indices to a record closing high.

JAKARTA -- Indonesian shares closed higher by 80.25 points, or 1.38 percent, to a level of 5,907.12 on Monday.

Some 421,998 transactions were booked, involving 13.3 billion copies of shares with a value of 7.1 trillion rupiah (about 490.8 million U.S. Dollars).

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Monday with decrease of 0.77 percent compared to the previous trading day.
