RIGA, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The city council of the Latvian capital Riga on Thursday elected councilor Dainis Turlais the new mayor, local media reported.

Turlais, a member of Honor to Serve Riga (GKR) party, is taking over from Nils Usakovs whom Regional Development Minister Juris Puce had suspended after a number of corruption scandals related to municipal enterprises broke out in Riga.

Usakovs, the leader of the leftist Harmony party, formally resigned as Riga mayor after he was elected to the European Parliament on May 25.

Until now, Turlais has been chairing the Riga city council's committee for security, public order and corruption prevention.

Turlais, 68, was commander of the Latvian armed forces from 1992 to 1994. He was also elected to the Latvian parliament in 1995. Enditem
