LOS ANGELES, June 1 (Xinhua) -- American entertainment company Warner Bros. and Chinese-owned Legendary Entertainment's "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" is on track to be king of the North American weekend box office with a debut around 50 million U.S. dollars.

According to Box Office Mojo, the monster film brought in an estimated 19.6 million dollars on Friday, which includes the 6.3 million dollars from Thursday night previews, adding that the film has chance to gross 50+ million dollars in North America through Sunday. It holds a 40 percent approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes along with a B+ CinemaScore.

Directed by Michael Dougherty, the film stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi among others.

"Godzilla: King of the Monsters" is a sequel to 2014's film "Godzilla" and the third film in MonsterVerse, a shared fictional universe that is centered on a series of monster films featuring Godzilla and King Kong, produced by Legendary Entertainment and co-produced and distributed by Warner Bros.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species-thought to be mere myths-rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity's very existence hanging in the balance.

The film opened simultaneously in North America and China on Friday. It already took top spot of the Chinese mainland box office on debut day with about 133.9 million yuan (about 19.4 million U.S. dollars), accounting for about 76 percent of the daily total, the China Movie Data Information Network said Saturday.

Chinese film marketing and investment company Huahua Media has joined Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. as a global partner on "Godzilla: King of the Monsters." The Beijing- and Shanghai-based company will help California-based Legendary Entertainment and its Chinese parent company, Dalian Wanda Group, market the film across China, according to American entertainment magazine The Hollywood Reporter.
