BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.3 percent at 2890.08.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.74 percent lower at 8856.99.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower for a fourth straight day Monday as global trade tensions saw investors seek out safe havens which pushed the yen up against the U.S. dollar and sent exporter issues lower.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 190.31 points, or 0.92 percent, from Friday to close the day at 20,410.88.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher Monday.

Benchmark indices ended at record closing highs as the three-day Monetary Policy Committee meeting started.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore shares closed 0.18 percent higher on Monday, but trade war jitters over latest U.S. tariff moves against Mexico and India weighed on market sentiment.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Monday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,655.31, up 4.55 points or 0.28 percent, and the Emas was at 11,591.43, up 3.06 points or 0.03 percent.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 7.23 points, or 0.03 percent, to 26,893.86 points on Monday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 26,735.48 and 26,968.1. Turnover totaled 82.72 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 10.55 billion U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 103.28 points on Monday, down 1.07 points, or 1.03 percent from the previous trading session.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Monday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 26.11 points, or 1.28 percent, to settle at 2,067.85. Trading volume stood at 381 million shares worth 4.6 trillion won (3.9 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 1.44 percent higher on Monday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 114.86 points to 8,084.88. The all-share index went up by 48.64 points, or 1.00 percent, to 4,939.01.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market finished sharply lower on Monday, as global growth concerns worsened.

At the market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was down 76.40 points or 1.19 percent at 6,320.50, while the broader All Ordinaries index was down 81 points or 1.25 percent at 6,410.80.
