KIGALI, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The agriculture sector is the leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Rwanda, said a report released by Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) on Wednesday.

In 2015, emissions from the sector accounted for 70.4 percent of the national total, largely due to fertilizer, urea application and enteric fermentation, revealed the REMA report on climate change.

The report noted that although the emissions from waste are not significant at the national level, the African country needs better management of both solid and liquid waste in reducing emissions.

Controlling the sources of emissions is the best way to go, which requires combined efforts from individuals to government, involving policies, laws, regulations and actions to improve the air quality, said Fatina Mukarubibi, permanent secretary in the Rwandan ministry of environment, when speaking at the launch of the report.
