NAIROBI, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The Africa Golf Confederation has renamed the East Africa Challenge Cup to Africa Region Four and expanded it from five countries to 14 teams starting this year.

The regional golf Challenge Cup, which has always been dominated by Kenya and Uganda, has teams from Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania.

However, Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) president Johnson Omollo said in Nairobi that they have agreed to expand the region to bring on board new members in conformity with the Africa Union sports commission requirements.

"The aim is to make the sport of gold available to all. We want to encourage other countries, who are yet to establish roots in golf to embrace it and develop it in their countries," he said.

Africa Union Sports Commission, which took over the function of the dissolved Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA), divided Africa into five regions.

Region One consists of countries from North Africa, West African nations form Region Two, Region Three has teams from Central Africa, Region Four for East Africa and Region Five for Southern Africa.

The east Africa region will now have teams from Burundi, Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion Island, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

Although, here are no known golf activities in Somalia and South Sudan, the two countries also fall under Region Four.

Last year, Democratic Republic of Congo sent a team to East Africa Challenge Cup, which has now been renamed Region Four Golf Cup.

This year's tournament was held in Bujumbura, Burundi last week. Seychelles and Ethiopia would host the 2021 and 2022 tournaments. Enditem
