BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 2.58 percent, at 2,925.72 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 3.74 percent higher at 9,037.67 points. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 3.91 percent to close at 1,487.35 points.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher Tuesday.

The benchmark S&P, BSE Sensex closed at 39,950.46, 165.94 points or 0.42 percent up compared to its previous close at 39,784.52.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday as initial profit-taking after the market's recent gains gave way to bargain-hunting encouraged by the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 69.86 points, or 0.33 percent, from Monday to close the day at 21,204.28.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Tuesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,651.20, down 4.27 points or 0.26 percent, and the Emas was at 11,629.39, down 12.97 points or 0.11 percent.

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going up 0.67 percent, or 21.47 points, to close at 3,209.58.

The STI index went up 0.69 percent, or 21.82 points, to close at 3,188.11 Monday.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market traded higher on Tuesday.

The S&P/NZX 50 Index grew 111.54 points, or 1.11 percent, to 10,139.15. Within the index, 30 stocks increased, 15 decreased, and five were unchanged. Turnover was 118.5 million New Zealand dollars.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 210.70 points, or 0.76 percent, to 27,789.34 points on Tuesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,577.91 and 27,857.85. Turnover totaled 91.60 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 11.70 billion U.S. dollars).

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.18 percent lower on Tuesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 14.41 points to 8,030.98. The all-share index went down by 4.63 points, or 0.09 percent, to 4,907.68.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market finished sharply higher on Tuesday, with almost all sectors trending upwards, with the exception of utilities which slumped.

At the market close, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 102.40 points or 1.59 percent at 6,546.30, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 99.20 points or 1.52 percent at 6,624.40.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Tuesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 12.32 points, or 0.59 percent, to settle at 2,111.81. Trading volume stood at 541.5 million shares worth 4.1 trillion won (3.5 billion U.S. dollars).
