S.Korea's May employment grows 259,000 year-over-year

SEOUL, June 12 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's employment grew 259,000 in May from a year earlier, with unemployment rate standing unchanged at 4 percent, a government report showed Wednesday.

The total number of those employed came to 27,322,000 in May, up 259,000 from a year ago, according to Statistics Korea. It was faster than an increase of 171,000 tallied in April.

Job creation among manufacturers shrank 73,000 in May from a year earlier, but employment in the healthcare and social welfare services sector expanded 124,000 last month.

The employment rate for those aged 15 or higher rose 0.2 percentage points over the year to 61.5 percent in May.

The number of those unemployed stood at 1,145,000 in May, up 24,000 from a year earlier. The jobless rate came in at 4 percent last month, unchanged from a year ago.

The youth unemployment rate for those aged 15-29 dipped 0.6 percentage points from a year earlier to 9.9 percent in May. Enditem
