Myanmar sends over 30,000 workers to work abroad in May

YANGON, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar sent 30,326 workers to work abroad legally in May, according to the country's Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population Wednesday.

The immigrant workers include 20,977 sent to Thailand, 8,237 sent to Malaysia, 658 to Japan, 377 to South Korea and 37 to Singapore.

In addition, 24,019 domestic job seekers were offered employment in some regions during May in Yangon, Bago, Mandalay, Sagaing, Ayeyawaddy and Tanintharyi.

Some 1,685 locals found employment in the states scattering in Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon, Shan and Rakhine.

The ministry said it is striving to create better employment opportunities through a new online labor exchange management system which serves as a bridge between employers and employees.

In May, Myanmar launched a five-year national level framework for international migrant workers management, cooperating with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Myanmar also laid down policies regarding migrant workers who are being sent for overseas employment under the law through 277 overseas employment agencies.

According to the ministry, the number of Myanmar migrant workers working overseas has hit five million, of whom about three million young workers are currently working in Thailand. Enditem
