BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.56 percent, at 2,909.38 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.92 percent lower at 8,954.71 points. The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.90 percent to close at 1,473.90 points.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved up 0.70 points, or 0.04 percent to close at 1,671.11 points.

Some 12.87 billion shares worth 44.22 billion baht (about 1.42 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed lower Wednesday. Among the sectors, except metal and FMCG all other indices ended lower led by pharma, auto, bank, energy and infra.

The benchmark S&P, BSE Sensex closed at 39,756.81, 193.65 points or 0.48 percent down compared to its previous close at 39,950.46.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia shares closed lower by 29.81 points, or 0.47 percent, to a level of 6,276.17 on Wednesday.

Some 476,612 transactions were booked, involving 12.7 billion copies of shares with a value of 7.4 trillion rupiah (about 519.9 million U.S. dollars).

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market went up on Wednesday.

The S&P/NZX 50 Index increased 65.99 points, 0.65 percent, to 10,205.14. Within the index, 31 stocks went up, 11 down, and eight were unchanged. Turnover was 128.6 million New Zealand dollars.

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.06 percent, or 1.84 points, to close at 3,207.74.

A total of 1.15 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1 billion Singapore dollars (about 733 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 146 to 218.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended mixed here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,650.74 down 0.46 points or 0.03 percent, and the Emas was at 11,630.91 up 1.52 points or 0.01 percent.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 103.56 points on Wednesday, down 0.4 points, or 0.38 percent from the previous trading session.

Over 27.3 million shares worth 295.1 billion Vietnamese dong (12.8 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Specifically, foreign investors bought 146,400 shares valued at roughly 2.8 billion Vietnamese dong (120,435 U.S. dollars), and sold nearly 1.2 million shares valued at over 3.7 billion Vietnamese dong (162,609 U.S. dollars).

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 954.17 points on Wednesday, down 7.90 points, or 0.82 percent against the previous trading day.

Nearly 138.110 million shares worth 3.931 trillion Vietnamese dong (170.9 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange, with prices of 110 stocks rising, 181 stocks decreasing, and 91 stocks remaining unchanged.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 480.88 points, or 1.73 percent, to 27,308.46 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,222.03 and 27,603.12. Turnover totaled 77.00 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 9.85 billion U.S. dollars).

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished lower on Wednesday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX) Index down 3.33 points, or 0.54 percent, to close at 612.61.

Three out of the five trading stocks decreased, the CSX said in a press release.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Wednesday with an increase of 0.51 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 4.11 points, reaching 814.71 points after closing.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday after the market inherited a weak lead from Wall Street overnight, with some investors opting to take profits before the release of key U.S. economic data due out later in the day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 74.56 points, or 0.35 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,129.72.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 3.06 points, or 0.14 percent, to settle at 2,108.75. Trading volume stood at 686 million shares worth 4.6 trillion won (3.9 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market has ended the day flat on Wednesday, with mixed results across the sectors.

At the close of trade, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was marginally down 2.60 points or 0.04 percent at 6,543.70, while the broader All Ordinaries index fractionally increased 4.50 points or 0.06 percent at 6,628.90. Enditem
