UNITED NATIONS, June 12 (Xinhua) -- A South African envoy called here on Wednesday for enhanced strategic and operational coordination of conflict prevention.

"South Africa believes that cooperation and coordination among the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations could play an important role in conflict prevention," said Jerry Matjila, permanent representative of South Africa to the United Nations.

Matjila made the remarks at the UN Security Council meeting on the "Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Conflict Prevention and Mediation."

The African Union and the United Nations undertook to enhance collaboration, cooperation and coordination in the search for sustainable solutions to ongoing and future challenges and to respond early, coherently and decisively to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts, Matjila said.

The South African envoy called for enhanced strategic and operational coordination of conflict prevention, resolution and mediation efforts by the United Nations, the African Union (AU), the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and other international and local actors, adding that such efforts should be aimed at strengthening the efficacy of conflict prevention and resolution efforts and to support African-led peace and security solutions based on subsidiarity and comparative advantage.

The promotion of the peaceful resolution of conflicts is a cornerstone of the foreign policy of South Africa, a country born out of its historical experiences in successfully and peacefully transitioning from its colonial past to a constitutional democracy based on respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, he said.

It is through this spirit and commitment that South Africa seeks peaceful resolution mediation for challenges and crisis in Sudan, the RECs countries, Venezuela, Central African Republic and other conflicts around the world, he said. Enditem
