ABUJA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Monday said an unknown number of Boko Haram fighters were killed following a military operation aimed at destroying a hideout of the terror group in the country's northeast region.

In a statement, NAF spokesman Ibikunle Daramola said the operation on Sunday was executed after persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions revealed the heavy presence of Boko Haram terrorists at a new camp with several structures hidden under the thick foliage of the forest in the northern state of Borno.

The Sambisa forest is the largest training camp of Boko Haram in the country.

Daramola said the air force had dispatched an Alpha jet to attack the new location of the terrorists, with its bombs hitting the target area and leaving devastating effects on several of the camouflaged structures.

"The fighter jet neutralized Boko Haram terrorist occupants in the area," he said.

According to the NAF spokesman, the air force operating in concert with surface forces would sustain efforts to completely degrade the terrorists in Nigeria's troubled northeast region. Enditem
