ADEN, Yemen, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Fighters of the Houthi group launched a bombardment against a number of villages in Yemen's southern province of Dhalea on Tuesday, leaving five people injured, a military official told Xinhua.

"The Houthi rebels launched a random shelling using mortars and artillery shells against a number of villages located near the frontlines in the northwest part of Dhalea province," said the official on condition of anonymity.

He said that Houthis resorted to carrying out artillery bombardment after suffering heavy losses during the ongoing fight with the government forces in Dhalea province during the past days.

"More than five civilians were injured including three children and a woman when Houthi-fired shells landed on their houses in Hajar area," he said.

Scores of families were forced to flee their houses and leave their properties behind fearing the renewed Houthi shelling, according to the official.

Both warring sides continued to mobilize large numbers of fighters to the frontlines in Dhalea amid non-stop armed confrontations taking place since several weeks ago in the southern region.

In April, scores of Houthi fighters launched a series of intense armed attacks on the positions of government forces and succeeded in seizing the district of Al Husha in the west of Dhalea.

The areas in the north and west of the government-controlled Dhalea have been witnessing continuous fighting between government forces and Houthi fighters for four years.

Yemen has been plagued by a civil war since late 2014 after Houthi rebels revolted and forced the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi into exile. Enditem
