ADEN, Yemen, June 19 (Xinhua) -- New Sudanese forces arrived on Wednesday in the southern port city of Aden to support the Yemeni government forces in the ongoing fighting against the Houthi rebels, a military official told Xinhua.

"Several units of the Sudanese army backed by armored vehicles arrived in Aden to continue their support for the government forces in the ongoing battles against Houthis," said the local military source, who asked to remain anonymous.

Witnesses said that a large convoy of military vehicles carrying Sudanese soldiers were noticed while they were heading to the main base of the Saudi-led coalition in Aden's western part.

Yemen's government forces were engaged in fierce armed confrontations with the Houthi rebels in various areas of the country during the past weeks.

Local military experts expected that the Saudi-led coalition may push the Sudanese forces to reinforce the Yemeni government forces and curb the Houthi military advancement into the country's southern provinces.

Sudan is part of the Saudi Arabia-led coalition and dispatched thousands of soldiers to fight the Houthi rebels in Yemen's western coast and other northern provinces.

Yemen has been mired into a civil war since late 2014, when Shiite Houthi rebels overran much of the country and seized all northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa.

The civil war has killed more than 10,000 people, mostly civilians, displaced 3 million others, and pushed Yemen to the brink of famine.

Saudi Arabia has been leading the war in Yemen for more than four years in support of the Yemeni exiled government against the Iran-allied Houthi rebels. Enditem
