UNITED NATIONS, June 19 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called for support for an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process.

Recently, the international community and regional countries have made efforts to promote direct dialogue between the Afghan government and the Taliban, said Ma Zhaoxu, China's permanent representative to the United Nations.

"We call on all parties in Afghanistan to put the overall interests of the country and its people first and seize the current major opportunity of political reconciliation," he said.

He also asked the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan to continue to support the Afghan government in promoting political dialogue in the country and encourage the Taliban to start negotiations with the Afghan government at an early date.

The international community should push for an intra-Afghan dialogue as soon as possible, he told a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan. Enditem
