TUNIS, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi met on Thursday with President of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) Nabil Baffoun for the preparations of the new elections.

"The meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming elections, particularly with regard to the amendments to the electoral law adopted recently by the Tunisian parliament," a statement released by the Tunisian presidency said.

The ISIE president assured Essebsi of the preparation of his electoral body for the legislative and presidential elections in the best conditions.

"The ISIE is ready for the success of the next elections, despite difficulties that may arise in the application of the new amendments," the statement quoted Baffoun as saying.

The amendments to the electoral law, once entering into force, will impose new responsibilities on the ISIE, he noted.

The new electoral law, as an amendment to the organic law of 2014 on elections and referendums, was adopted by the parliament with 128 votes in favour.

The ISIE announced earlier that the legislative and presidential elections in Tunisia will be held respectively on Oct. 6 and Nov. 17. Enditem
