MANILA, June 24 (Xinhua) -- At least nine students were injured after the roof of a newly-built school covered court in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines collapsed on Monday.
Joel San Juan Garcia, the school principal of Sinubong National High School, said the students were attending English class when the accident happened around 8:30 a.m. on Monday amid heavy downpour.
The covered court of the school was being used as a temporary classroom, he said.
“The teacher and students first heard a loud creaking sound and the students and teacher ran away for their safety,” Garcia said.
The teachers said more than 50 students had been using the covered court for their classes because their classroom building had a leaky roof.
Garcia said plastic chairs that the students had been using helped cushion the impact of the collapse.
The students, who mostly sustained contusions were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, he said.
City Engineer Christopher Navarro said the city will conduct an investigation into the accident that may have caused by faulty welded trusses. Enditem
