KIEV, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The construction of lightweight repository storage for radioactive waste has begun at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in eastern Ukraine, Interfax news agency quoted the press service of Energoatom, Ukraine's nuclear energy generating company.

The repository storage is designed to hold 1,300 reinforced concrete containers four barrels each. In that way the storage facility can accommodate 5,200 barrels of radioactive waste, according to the Zaporizhia plant press release.

The repository storage will be built next to the radioactive waste processing complex. The construction is expected to be finished by 2021.

Zaporizhzhya NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

The plant generates 40 to 42 billion kwh of electricity, which accounts for one-fifth of the average annual electricity production in Ukraine and almost 50 percent of electricity generated at Ukrainian NPPs. Enditem.
