RABAT, June 24 (Xinhua) -- The 12th Peace and Security Council of African Union (AU) meeting kicked off on Monday in the Moroccan seaside town of Skhirat.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Moroccan minister delegate in charge of African Cooperation, Mohcine Jazouli, said that the reform of the Council "must be guided by fundamental parameters that would have a real impact."

Morocco invites the Council to strengthen its action in the framework of a partnership approach with the UN peacebuilding commission for lasting peace in Africa, he added.

The president of the Council for the month of July 2019, Ambassador Brahima Patrick Kapuwa of Sierraleone stressed the necessity of improving the working methods of this mechanism.

The Council is facing a series of challenges that will be discussed at this meeting, he added.

According to the Moroccan foreign ministry, this three-day gathering, held ahead of Morocco's upcoming presidency of the Council, will examine the peace-building actions in Africa, the working methods of the Council and the challenges of crisis management and conflict resolution in Africa. Enditem
