ULAN BATOR, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A suicidal woman and a policeman who tried to save her drowned in a river in western Mongolia, the country's National Police Agency (NPA) said Wednesday.

"We are regretful to say that a policeman died in the line of duty in Bayan-Ulgii Province in the west on Tuesday. The 30-year-old policeman drowned in the Khovd River while trying to save a woman attempting suicide after arguing with her husband," the NPA said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, the woman also drowned in the river," the NPA said, adding that the water level was high and the flow was strong when the incident occurred.

Mongolia, with a population of 3.2 million, is one of the countries with the highest suicidal rates in the world, with 28.40 suicides per 100,000 people, according to data published by the World Health Organization in 2017. Enditem
