PARIS, July 3 (Xinhua) -- France's defense firm Naval Group had won a 1.2 billion euro (1.35 billion U.S. dollar) deal to build four Gowind navy corvettes for Romania to help guarantee security in the Black Sea, the country's Ministry of Armed Forces announced on Wednesday.

Under the seven-year-deal, Naval Group will deliver the first batch of ships in 2022 and also renovate two existing Romanian frigates, the ministry said in a press release.

"Romania becomes the first European country, but also the first NATO country, to acquire this type of warship," it added, noting that "the Godwind has the ideal capacity to ensure security in the Black Sea."

Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly, hailed Romania's decision to choose French navy industry, and which she said would consolidate "the effort to build a strong and ambitious defense system in Europe."

The minister added the new contract will help to create 400 jobs over the next five years.
