MANILA -- A Filipino man died and seven others injured when a commuter van tumbled down a curve along a highway in Culianan, a village in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, local police said on Thursday.

MOSCOW -- A fire in the battery compartment and its spread caused the deadly incident on a Russian deep-water apparatus on Monday, while the nuclear reactor on board was not affected, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Thursday.

"The nuclear reactor on this vessel is completely isolated and deserted. The crew carried out all the necessary procedures to protect the installation, so it is fully operational," Shoigu told Russian President Vladimir Putin. (Russia-Submersible Fire)

GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- At least 17 militants loyal to the Taliban were killed and five others wounded following a clearance operation in Qarabagh district of the eastern Ghazni province, an official said Thursday.

Afghan special force launched an anti-insurgent operation in Moshaki area of Qarabagh district on Wednesday to strengthen security of the Kabul-Kandahar highway passing through the restive Ghazni province, killing at least 17 militants and wounding five others, Aref Nuri, the provincial governor's spokesman said.
