LOS ANGELES -- A magnitude 7.1 earthquake on Friday hit southern California at 8:19 p.m. local time (0319 GMT Saturday), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS)

The epicenter is near Ridgercrest, a city located 272 km north of Los Angeles downtown. A nearby area was hit by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake Thursday. (US-California-Earthquake)

HERAT, Afghanistan -- Up to 19 fighters including nine security personnel and a Taliban key commander Mullah Ghousuding along with nine of his armed men have been killed in Karakh district of the western Herat province, provincial police chief Aminullah Omarkhil said Saturday.

"The Taliban rebels under Mullah Ghousuding attacked security checkpoints in Maluma area of Karakh district in the wee hours of Saturday, triggering fierce fighting which lasted for several hours and resultantly 19 fighters including nine security personnel and 10 militants including the infamous Taliban commander Ghousudin were killed," Omarkhil told Xinhua. MANILA -- Five alleged gunmen were killed in a shootout with soldiers in a roadside checkpoint in Pikit, a town in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato Friday night, an army spokesman said on Saturday.

GABORONE -- Botswanan President Mokgweetsi Masisi is under constant threat and Botswanan security forces have taken measures to ensure his safety, a senior intelligence official said here Friday.
