MANILA, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Eight inmates escaped a jail in Lamitan City on the southern Philippine island province of Basilan Sunday morning while jail guards are asleep, police said.

Police Lieutenant colonel Christopher Panapan, chief of the Lamitan City police, said the prisoners fled around 8:00 a.m., carting away two M16 assault rifles issued to the jail guards.

Panapan said the eight inmates are serving time for murder and drug-related offenses.

A manhunt operation has been immediately launched, Panapan said. Moreover, a probe has also been launched to look into security lapses, he added. Enditem
