PARIS, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Dutch runner Sifan Hassan broke women's mile world record, while American veteran Justin Gatlin outplayed his promising compatriot Noah Lyles in men's 100m of the IAAF Diamond League Monaco on Friday.

In the Stade Louis II, Hassan, born in Ethiopia, set a new world record of 4 minutes and 12.33 seconds in the non-Olympic event, shattering the 23-year-old mark of 4:12.56 by Russia's Svetlana Masterkova.

"I knew I could run fast but the first 800 was a bit slow, so after that I wasn't thinking it would be a world record. When I crossed the line, I was so surprised," Hassan admitted to the IAAF website.

The reigning world champion Gatlin, 37, finished the 100m sprint in 9.91, just one hundredth of a second over the 21-year-old Lyles.

Also on Friday, American talent Sydney McLaughlin, 19, posted a world leading time of 53.32 in women's 400m hurdles.

Nijel Amos of Botswana registered a new meeting record of 1:41.89 in men's 800m. Reigning world champion Pierre-Ambroise Bosse of France only finished ninth.

"I did an impossible session on Tuesday and after that I knew I could run 1:41. The world record is not in my mind, but if I'm patient, it will come," said Amos.

Bahamas's Shaunae Miller-Uibo claimed the women's 200m title with a season best of 22.09, ahead of Jamaica's Rio Olympics gold medalist Elaine Thompson in 22.44, and two-time world champion Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands in 22.45. Enditem
