SYDNEY, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck 25 km north of Kandrian in the South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Monday, according to U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor which occurred at 0821 GMT was initially determined to be at 5.990 degrees south latitude and 149.552 degrees east longitude at a depth of 59.0 km.

Resting on the Australia-Pacific plate boundary, the fault line which lies beneath PNG and the West New Britain Province is often referred to as "The Ring of Fire" for its destructive force.

In the past two months alone, the West and East New Britain region has recorded 10 earthquakes above 4.5 magnitude.

It is not yet known if there are any casualties or injuries, and the extent of damage to structures remains unclear.

Although the small community of Kandrian is remote, there is an airport on the outskirts of the village.

No tsunami warning was issued for the surrounding waters. Enditem
