TOKYO, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar offset a solid lead from Wall Street overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 150.65 points, or 0.69 percent, from Friday to close the day at 21,535.25.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 7.57 points, or 0.48 percent, to finish at 1,568.74.

Oil and coal product, electric power and gas, and precision instrument-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.

Markets here were closed Monday for a national holiday. Enditem
