PHNOM PENH, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Eighty-three containers of plastic waste imported into Cambodia were found at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

Environment ministry spokesman Neth Pheaktra said Kun Nhim, director general of the General Department of Customs and Excise, and Environment Minister Say Samal inspected those containers of trash on Tuesday afternoon.

“The authorities are determining the origin(s) of the trash and we will send it back to the original countries,” he said in a statement. “The company that imported the trash will be fined in accordance to the law.”

He said the ministry of environment and relevant authorities will conduct a thorough investigation to find out the origin(s) and motive that led to the import of the waste to Cambodia.

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen has said that the government does not allow the import of any kinds of waste to Cambodia for recycling, saying that the country is not the dumping ground for any form of waste. Enditem
