ALGIERS, July 16 (Xinhua) -- An Algerian official at the foreign ministry expressed on Tuesday Algeria's denouncement of "foreign military intervention" in the embattled city of Idlib in northwestern Syria, saying it is likely to prolong the civil war gripping the country.

"Algeria deplores the foreign military intervention in Idlib by a neighboring country," the official was quoted by state-run APS news agency as saying on condition of anonymity.

He said such intervention is hindering efforts aiming at restoring peace in Syria.

"This intervention, in addition to violating the good neighborliness principle and respect for sovereignty of states, would extend the crisis and undermine chances to solve it through political dialogue," he noted.

"Algeria reaffirms its solidarity with the government and the brotherly Syrian people," the official concluded.

The remarks came a day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted by Anatolia news agency as saying his country has been closely following up developments in the region, especially in Egypt, Libya, Algeria and Tunisia. Enditem
