TOKYO, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The benchmark Nikkei stock index lost ground Wednesday morning after U.S. shares retreated overnight on renewed concerns over the outlook for the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 87.07 points, or 0.40 percent, from Tuesday to 21,448.18.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged up 0.15 point, or 0.01 percent, at 1,568.89.
