TOKYO -- Japanese police on Saturday obtained arrest warrant for the man who was apprehended over a deadly arson attack on a Kyoto Animation Co. studio, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Shinji Aoba, 41, was taken to a hospital in Kyoto after allegedly setting fire to the three-storey studio building with gasoline, which killed 34 people. (Japan-Arrest Warrant)

NEW DELHI -- The Indian government is in touch with the Iranian government regarding the detention of Indian crew members along with the oil tanker Stena Impero, which is said to be in custody of Iran, said a government spokesman in New Delhi on Saturday.

ISLAMABAD -- The Pakistani government has taken a major step to mainstream and transform the country's northwest tribal districts by holding the first-ever provincial elections in the region, once the safe haven of local and foreign militants.

Voting for the elections in the tribal districts, formerly known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), started on Saturday morning for the first time since the areas had been merged with the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said. MANILA -- The Philippine government said on Saturday it is coordinating with Iran to ensure the safety of a Filipino seafarer who was among the 23 crew members of a Britain-registered vessel seized by Iranian authorities late on Friday while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- At least 24 Taliban militants have been killed and 17 wounded in guided missile strikes in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province, the Afghan military said Saturday.

"Based on intelligence reports, 24 Taliban militants were killed and 17 others wounded in guided missile strikes in Khas Uruzgan district, Uruzgan province," army Corps 201 Selab said in a statement without disclosing the exact time of the strikes. (Afghanistan-Militants) Enditem
