MUSCAT, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Oman on Sunday urged the Iranian government to release the captured British ship, saying the two countries should resolve their differences through diplomatic means.

Oman "calls upon all countries to exercise restraint, respect the maritime separation lines and international maritime law and not to endanger the region," the Omani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Oman is in contact with all parties to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, the ministry statement noted.

On Friday, Iran announced the seizure of a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, saying the detained tanker did not comply with navigation laws. Enditem
