NEW DELHI -- The death toll in India's flood-hit states has risen to 169, including 102 deaths in Bihar and 67 in Assam over the past eight days, official data provided by the two states showed on Sunday.

Among the Bihar's 12 flood-affected districts, the maximum of 27 deaths have been reported from Sitamarhi district alone, while 23 deaths reported from Madhubani, 12 from Arariya, 10 each from Darbhanga and Seohar, and nine deaths from Purnia district. (India-Floods-Toll)

TOKYO -- Japan's ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to win more than half of the contested seats in Sunday's upper house election, maintaining a majority in the chamber, according to Kyodo News and NHK exit polls.

According to the polls, the ruling bloc is expected to win at least 63 out of the 124 seats up for grabs, crossing the victory line set by Abe to maintain a majority in the 245-seat chamber. (Japan-Upper House-Election)

WELLINGTON -- The first full week of New Zealand's firearms buyback and amnesty, which aims to remove the most dangerous weapons from circulation, has produced a strong turnout as events roll out nationwide for the first time.

ISLAMABAD -- A total of 10 people were killed and 24 others injured in a string of terrorist attacks in Dera Ismail khan district of Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a senior official and police said on Sunday.

The militants carried out two back-to-back attacks at police at a check post and later at a hospital in the district, Pakistani Prime Minister's Special Assistant of information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan said, adding that the killed included six police and several policemen were also injured in the attack.
