TRIPOLI, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army on Sunday announced shooting down a Turkish-made drone of the UN-backed government, as the armed conflict continues between the two parties.

"The air defense of the armed forces stopped an airstrike and shot down a Turkish-made drone of the militias (government forces)," the army's information office said in a statement.

The drone was shot down in Ain Zara area in southern Tripoli, according to the army.

The eastern-based army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli from the government.

The fighting so far has killed more than a thousand people, injured more than 5,700 others, and forced more than 120,000 people to flee their homes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability ever since the fall of the government of late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Enditem
