HERAT, Afghanistan -- A district governor and a security personnel were killed and five people wounded in a bomb attack in Afghanistan's western Herat province on Saturday, a local police official said.

"Shukrullah Shakir, the district chief of Zinda Jan, and a security guard were killed following an improvised explosive device attack in Tara Khil locality of Zinda Jan district at around midday," police official Farzad Forutan told Xinhua. (Afghansitan-Bomb Attack-Toll)

MANILA -- The Philippine Coast Guard said that at least seven people died and eight others were reported missing after two ferry boats sank at around 12:15 p.m. on Saturday in the central Philippines.

Coast guard spokesman Captain Armand Balilo said in a text message to Xinhua that 31 people have so far been rescued. He said the boats have more than 40 passengers and crew on board at the time of the accident. (Philippines-Boats-Capsizal)

ABUJA -- The multinational force fighting Boko Haram along the Lake Chad region on Saturday debunked claims that militants attacked a military base and killed up to 40 in Baga, a town in Nigeria's northeast region.
