MEXICO CITY, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican Foreign Ministry said Thursday that 122 Mexicans were detained in coordinated raids at several food processing plants in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard earlier said 107 Mexicans had been detained, and the foreign ministry later updated the figure to 122, "of whom 34 have been released and issued a court summons," it said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Wednesday arrested a total of 680 undocumented immigrants at the plants in what was being called one of the largest workplace raids in history.

Ebrard added the government would provide consular assistance and "guarantee the adequate legal defense of all Mexican nationals."

Those arrested were unable to provide documents verifying their status as residents or temporary workers.

According to the Pew Research Center, about 4.9 million undocumented Mexicans live in the United States, mostly in California, Texas and Illinois. Enditem
