MANILA, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Three leftist rebels and a government soldier have been killed in a clash in the central Philippines, the military said on Friday.

The Philippine Army said in a report that two other soldiers have also been wounded in the 30-minute clash between government troops and about 20 New People's Army (NPA) guerrillas that broke out around 2:00 p.m. local time on Thursday in a small village in Himamaylan City of Negros Occidental province.

According to the report, government troops recovered various types of guns and ammunition from the scene.

The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP). Since the 1980s, the government has been trying to reach a peace deal with the communist rebels but has so far failed to reach a formal agreement.

The NPA has waged a protracted rebellion since the 1960s. Enditem
