LOS ANGELES, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Harbin Engineering University team of China, who won the top prize at the annual International RoboSub Competition, successfully showcased autonomous behavior on the underwater course, an organizer of RoboSub told Xinhua on Thursday.

The Chinese team won the championship of the competition this year held from July 29 to Aug. 4 in San Diego, California, and received a 6,000-U.S. dollar cash reward.

"As a returning team to competition, the Harbin Engineering University team was able to use previous experiences competing with the difficulties of the course and the challenges that come with competition," said Julianna Smith, outreach specialist of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), and an organizer of the competition.

It is the second time that the Chinese team won the top prize at RoboSub competition following last year's championship, which was also the first RoboSub team representing Asia to win the first-place title, said Smith.

Previously, American and Canadian teams dominated the competition for about 20 years since the contest was launched in 1998.

Smith said the RoboSub competition continues to grow every year. The 2019 competition attracted a record number of 53 competing teams from worldwide.

Launched in 1997, RoboSub is an underwater robotics program in which high school and college students from around the world design and build an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV).

The goal of RoboSub is to advance the development of AUVs by challenging a new generation of engineers to perform realistic missions in an underwater environment.

The week-long autonomous submarine competition was co-sponsored by the Office of Naval Research and the AUVSI Foundation. Enditem
