BANGKOK, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- A trial run on part of Bangkok metro Green Line's northern extension was launched on Friday.

Thailand's Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday presided over the launch ceremony for the trial run of the urban rail project on Bangkok's northern outskirts.

The trial run is conducted between Mor Chit station and Ha Yaek Lat Phrao station as part of a stretch from Mor Chit station to Saphan Mai station in Bangkok and to Khu Khot station in Pathum Thani province.

The Green Line rail project on the Mor Chit-Saphan Mai-Khu Khot route is part of the Ministry of Transport's infrastructure development plan implemented during 2015 and 2022 by the MRTA to shuttle commuters in Bangkok and outlying areas.

An estimated 70,000 to 80,000 passengers are expected daily.

Four new stations will open along the Green Line northern extension route to alleviate congestion at Mor Chit station by the end of this year.

The elevated metro project is a stretch from the BTS rail project connected at Mor Chit station and runs on the 19-kilometer route with 16 stations built by universal design along the way. Enditem
