GHAZNI, Afghanistan, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Fighting aircraft launched a spate of airstrikes, killing nine militants loyal to the Taliban group, in the eastern Ghazni province on Thursday night, provincial government said in a statement released here Friday.

The air attacks targeted Taliban militants' hideouts in the restive Gilan and Giru districts of the province, late on Thursday night, leaving at least nine insurgents dead and several others wounded, the statement added. (Afghanistan-Taliban)

RIO DE JANEIRO -- At least 115 people were arrested on Thursday in Brazil after the conclusion of a countrywide operation against criminal gangs and corrupt government agents linked to organized crime, the police said.

Joint operations were undertaken simultaneously in the states of Acre, Amapa, and Amazonas in the north; Alagoas, Bahia, Ceara, and Pernambuco in the northeast; Mato Grosso do Sul in the central west; and Rio de Janeiro in the southeast. SEOUL -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday fired two unidentified short-range projectiles off its east coast, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).

The projectiles were launched at 8:01 a.m. and 8:16 a.m. local time respectively from the DPRK's eastern coastal county of Tongchon into the East Sea. (DPRK-Projectiles)

UNITED NATIONS -- Fatalities in the latest airstrikes in northwest Syria include two humanitarian workers, a paramedic, an ambulance driver and a rescue worker, a UN spokesman said on Thursday.

Their ambulance was completely destroyed in the Ma'arat Humeh area in southern Idlib province on Wednesday, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. (Syria-Airstrike) Enditem
