MADRID, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- So far in 2019, 268 people have lost their lives due to drowning in Spain, an increase of 20 percent over 2018, said a report published on Monday by the Spanish Federation for Lifeguards and Rescue (RFESS).
The report said the period from Jan. 1 to Aug. 15 saw 46 deaths more than last year.
In July, 95 people drowned as the start of the holiday season also coincided with a series of heatwaves that hit the country in a summer which has so far been both hotter and drier than 2018.
The number of drownings increased in nine of Spain's 17 autonomous communities, with the highest number of deaths in traditional holiday areas, the Comunidad Valencia (37), Catalonia (32) and Andalusia (32).
So far 212 men have died by drowning in Spain this year, in comparison to 56 women, with 207 of the total number of victims coming from Spain. Enditem
