UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's envoy to the United Nations (UN) on Tuesday urged more efforts to seek political settlement of regional hotspot issues in the Middle East.

At a Security Council meeting on Middle East peace and security challenges, Zhang Jun, Chinese permanent representative to the UN, said the international community should work harder to achieve political settlement of the issues, as well as support the UN's role as the main channel of mediation.

He warned against willful use or threat of force, external intervention, power politics and bullying in dealing with the Middle East issues.

Furthermore, he called on the world to assist countries in the region in achieving sustainable development.

In this regard, Zhang said the international community should support regional countries in exploring development path suited to their national conditions and building mutually beneficial and win-win partnerships to achieve economic and social progress.

Addressing tough challenges for the Middle East, he also said the UN should deepen cooperation with regional and sub-regional organizations, such as the Arab League, and consolidate and strengthen collective security mechanism.

Concluding his speech, Zhang said China is committed to peace and stability in the Middle East, maintains close communication with relevant countries, and plays an active and constructive role in advancing political settlement of hotspot issues in the region.

China will continue to make unremitting efforts to achieve lasting security and prosperity in the Middle East, the Chinese envoy pledged. Enditem
