GABORONE, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Botswana on Tuesday held the 2nd Innovating Education in Africa Expo 2019 in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.

This is an initiative by the Botswana government in conjunction with the African Union Commission (AUC).

The 3-day expo, themed "Harnessing the Capacity of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to ensure Inclusion, Quality and Impact in Education and Training in Africa," is a flagship event of the AUC to showcase practical social and technological innovations aimed at enhancing access, quality, relevance and inclusion in education to release the potential for empowerment, employability and inventiveness.

Speaking at the event, Slumber Tsogwane, Botswana's vice president, said innovation is critical for today's development and will help find innovative solutions that can solve today's problems in the education system.

"The context in which we used to operate has evolved. The way we look at the world of work and how we approach it is so far from yesterday's requirement that our old paradigms are no longer appropriate or relevant. This requires a change in the frame of mind," he said.

There is need for Africans to also start making the necessary investments to ensure they are not left behind in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, stated Tsogwane.

To provide good governance and coordination of all innovative efforts, Botswana has established the Botswana Innovation Hub to foster high technology business and commercialize ideas for sustainable economic growth.

One of its key objectives is to assist homegrown innovators with targeted interventions to achieve scalable operations.

On her part, Sarah Anyang Agbor, AUC Human Resources, Science and Technology commissioner, stated that although modern technologies are critical in enhancing education platforms, they are no substitute to the importance of the teacher and can only supplement the teacher. Enditem
