BEIJING -- Chinese shares closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.11 percent, at 2,883.44 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.3 percent higher at 9,350.56 points.

SINGAPORE -- Singaporean stocks closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going up 0.17 percent, or 5.17 points, to close at 3,127.74.

A total of 1.42 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 955.15 million Singaporean dollars (about 688.64 million U.S. dollars). Losers equaled gainers by 190 to 190.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 221.32 points, or 0.84 percent, to 26,048.72 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 25,977.67 and 26,288.24. Turnover totaled 78.41 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 10.00 billion U.S. dollars).

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market's indicator, the S&P/NZX 50 index, increased slightly by 0.12 percent to 10,725 on Thursday.

The rise was led by New Talisman Gold Mines Limited, which went up by 14.29 percent to 0.008 NZ dollars (0.005 U.S. dollars), while Cavalier Corporation Limited dropped by 10.53 percent to 0.255 NZ dollars.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed flat Thursday, as investors opting to take profits offset earlier rises on the back of U.S. shares advancing overnight on solid retail data.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 9.44 points, or 0.05 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 20,628.01. Enditem
