H1N1 death toll surpasses 100 in Myanmar

YANGON, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of influenza A (H1N1) amounted to 102 so far, said figures released by the Public Health Department under the Ministry of Health and Sports late Friday.

A total of 489 laboratory confirmed H1N1 infection cases were registered across Myanmar from January 1 to August 23 this year.

Of the total deaths, 83 deaths were those who suffered from H1N1 influenza with underlying diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, and other immune-deficiency conditions, said a report of the Central Epidemiology Unit and National Health Laboratory under the ministry.

Regionally, Yangon region registered the highest mortality rate with 66 deaths, followed by Ayeyarwady region with 13 deaths and Bago region with nine deaths while Sagaing and Magway regions registered three deaths each.

Also, three deaths were reported in Mon state, two in Rakhine state, one state each in Kachin, Shan states and Tanintharyi region during the period.

The seasonal influenza virus was detected in July 2017, claiming at least 38 lives across Myanmar. Enditem
