TRIPOLI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The UN-backed government of Libya on Wednesday denied resignation and handing over power to the rival east-based government, confirming that its official Twitter account has been hacked.

"The Twitter page of the Government of National Accord (GNA) has been hacked and this false statement has been published," the UN-backed government said in a statement.

The Dubai-based Al Arabiya TV had said that the GNA announced the resignation of the Presidency Council in Tripoli.

The UN-backed government has been engaged in a deadly armed conflict since early April in and around the capital Tripoli against the east-based army, which is trying to take over the city and overthrow the UN-backed government.

The east-based army, led by General Khalifa Haftar, is allied with the east-based government, as the north African nation is politically divided between eastern and western governments.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011. Enditem
