WELLINGTON, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Tonga language week was launched in Wellington on Saturday, the third of seven Pacific language weeks to be held in New Zealand this year.
The theme of Tonga Language Week is "a Tongan Perspective of Enriching Aotearoa, New Zealand."
Minister for Pacific Peoples Aupito William Sio said "Everyone should be able to think, dream and speak in their mother language. But, right now, the future of the Pacific languages is fragile and diminishing by the generation."
"The theme of Tonga language week provides us opportunities to reflect on the huge contribution of Pacific languages to Aotearoa," Sio added.
The New Zealand government will allocate 20 million New Zealand dollars over the next four years to ensure thriving Pacific languages. Enditem
