Israeli hospital sets AI system for remote detection of medical deterioration

JERUSALEM, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Ichilov Hospital, one of Israel's three largest hospitals, announced on Wednesday that it has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) system to remotely monitor patients' condition, identify medical deterioration and immediately alert the medical staff.

The system, which consists of sensors and cameras, monitors the condition of patients who are not connected to a personal monitor and, if necessary, alerts the medical staff.

The system is supposed to solve a typical problem in Israeli hospitals where a few nurses must look after many patients, failing to be always possible to notice a medical deterioration in time.

Looking for a technology that can collect patient data and alert in advance, Ichilov Hospital collaborated with two Israeli AI companies, Innovision and BioBeat, which specialize in medical monitoring systems.

The idea was to develop an algorithm that could calculate whether in a few hours the patient could deteriorate.

In the new system, patient data is collected by sensors, along with a camera aimed at his bed to recognize an abnormal change such as blood pressure drop or an increase in heart rate.

According to the hospital, the medical staff need systems to help identify complex situations and to control massive amounts of data for many patients. "If we want everything to be accurate, this requires working with AI systems."
