BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rising for the fifth day in a row.

The Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.46 percent to close at 2,999.6 points. The Shenzhen Component Index climbed 0.41 percent to 9,823.42 points.

TOKYO -- The benchmark Nikkei stock index closed higher for the fourth straight day on Friday, with exporters lifted by the yen's retreat against the U.S. dollar after upbeat economic data released by the United States.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 113.63 points, or 0.54 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 21,199.57.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 175.23 points, or 0.66 percent, to 26,690.76 points on Friday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 26,563.17 and 26,790.79. Turnover totaled 99.87 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 12.74 billion U.S. dollars).

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed higher Friday. Among sectors, buying witnessed in metal (up 2 percent), auto (up 2.5 percent) followed by infra, energy and bank, while FMCG and pharma ended marginally lower. Midcap and smallcap gained more than 0.5 percent.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.08 percent, or 2.58 points, to close at 3,144.48.

A total of 897.04 million shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.01 billion Singapore dollars (about 730.56 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 208 to 158.

JAKARTA -- Indonesia shares closed higher by 2.14 points, or 0.03 percent, to a level of 6,308.95 on Friday.

Some 529,937 transactions were booked, involving 14.5 billion copies of shares with a value of 8.6 trillion rupiah (about 610.1 million U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- The HNX-Index, the benchmark of Vietnam's northern Hanoi Stock Exchange, dipped for the second week in a row to 100.92 points on Friday from last week's closure of 102.32 points.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Friday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,604.47, up 4.72 points or 0.30 percent, and the Emas was at 11,281.12, up 33.85 points or 0.30 percent.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.45 percent higher on Friday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 35.28 points to 7,933.47. The all-share index went up by 10.74 points, or 0.22 percent, to 4,785.02.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher Friday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 4.38 points, or 0.22 percent, to settle at 2,009.13. Trading volume stood at 377 million shares worth 3.6 trillion won (3 billion U.S. dollars).

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market's indicator, the S&P/NZX 50 index, jumped by 0.99 percent to 11,219 on Friday.

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market finished sharply higher on Friday, resulting in a third straight week of gains.

At the market close the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 34.10 points or 0.52 percent at 6,647.30, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 31.90 points or 0.47 percent at 6,752.70. Enditem
